How to Check Pvt Ltd & LLP Company Registration in India
A practical, step-by-step walk-through of the MCA portal — verify any Indian company or LLP by name, CIN or LLPIN, read the status correctly, and know what to do if something looks off.

Why verifying company registration matters
Before you sign a vendor contract, accept an investment, hire a director, or pay an advance, it pays to spend two minutes confirming that the company on the other side of the table is genuinely registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) — and that it is still Active. Indian law treats unregistered or struck-off companies very differently from active ones, and the MCA portal is the single source of truth.
The good news: MCA's public Master Data search is free, and you don't need a login to use it. Below we walk through three reliable methods.
Method 1 — MCA Master Data search (by name)
- Open mca.gov.in .
- Go to MCA Services → Master Data → View Company/LLP Master Data.
- Pick "Company" or "LLP" and type the entity's full registered name.
- Enter the captcha and submit. You'll see CIN/LLPIN, status, ROC, date of incorporation, registered office, paid-up capital, and listing status.
Tip: trade names and brand names won't always match the legal name. Ask the counterparty for the exact name on their PAN or incorporation certificate.
Method 2 — Search by CIN or LLPIN
A CIN looks like U72200KA2018PTC112233 — 21 characters, encoding listing status, industry, state, year, type and registration number. An LLPIN is 7 characters like AAB-1234. Searching by CIN/LLPIN avoids name-collision issues.
From the same Master Data screen, paste the CIN or LLPIN and submit. Cross-check the registered office and date of incorporation against any contract or pitch deck you've received.
Method 3 — Verify directors and DPINs
A company's reputation often rests on the integrity of its directors. Under MCA Services → Master Data → View Signatory Details, you can see every active director and their DIN. Use DIN Services → Verify DIN PAN Details to confirm a director's name against PAN and check whether they have been disqualified under Section 164(2) of the Companies Act.
How to read the registration status
- Active — the company is duly registered and statutory filings are reasonably up to date.
- Active – Non-compliant — registered, but key filings (AOC-4 / MGT-7) are pending. Treat cautiously.
- Under Process of Striking Off — MCA has initiated removal; transacting now is risky.
- Strike Off / Dissolved — the company is no longer a legal person. Avoid contracts and payments.
- Amalgamated / Converted — the entity has merged or changed form. Verify the successor entity instead.
Red flags to watch out for
- Registered office address is residential and the company claims a large team.
- "Active – Non-compliant" status for more than one financial year.
- Frequent director changes in the last 12 months without a clear reason.
- Authorised capital and paid-up capital that don't match a bigger funding story being pitched.
- The "company" is actually a sole proprietorship or partnership firm (no CIN, no MCA record).

Our experts can run a free MCA + GST compliance check for your Pvt Ltd or LLP — and tell you exactly which filings are pending before MCA can strike you off.
Keep your own registration active
Once you've verified a counterparty, turn the lens on yourself. The most common reason Indian companies fall off the MCA Active list isn't fraud — it's missed deadlines. The filings that matter most:
Frequently asked questions
How can I check if a Pvt Ltd company is registered in India?
Visit the MCA portal (mca.gov.in), go to MCA Services → Master Data → View Company/LLP Master Data, and search by company name or CIN. The result shows the company's status, incorporation date, registered office and current directors.
What does an LLP registration status look like on MCA?
For an LLP, use the same Master Data search but pick the LLP option, or search by LLPIN. Active LLPs show 'Active' status; inactive or struck-off LLPs show 'Strike Off' or 'Under Process of Striking Off'.
What is a CIN and how is it different from a GSTIN?
CIN (Corporate Identification Number) is a 21-character ID issued by MCA at incorporation. GSTIN is a 15-character ID issued under GST law for tax compliance. A company can have a CIN without a GSTIN and vice versa.
Why does a company show as 'Strike Off' on MCA?
MCA strikes off companies that fail to file AOC-4 and MGT-7 for consecutive years, or that voluntarily apply for closure. A struck-off company cannot legally trade until it is restored by the NCLT.
Can I check director details (DIN) on the MCA portal?
Yes. Under MCA Services → Master Data → View Signatory Details (or DIN/DPIN Services → Verify DIN PAN Details), you can verify a director's DIN, name and disqualification status.
